Description

Sogou Input Method for Windows contains a vulnerability in the configuration retrieval mechanism of its SGTool.exe component. The application retrieves configuration data over unencrypted HTTP connections, allowing an attacker capable of manipulating network traffic to replace legitimate server responses with malicious configurations. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to instruct SGTool.exe to download attacker-controlled files to arbitrary locations, including paths used by legitimate application components. This can result in arbitrary code execution when the downloaded files are subsequently executed or loaded by the application.

Executive Summary

Sogou Input Method for Windows has a flaw in its SGTool.exe component where it fetches configuration data over unencrypted HTTP instead of HTTPS. This allows attackers to intercept and alter the data, tricking the app into downloading malicious files to system locations. These files can then execute arbitrary code when loaded by the application.

Detection Guidance

Monitor network traffic for unencrypted HTTP requests to Sogou Input Method endpoints, particularly to getBrandScd.php. Check for unexpected file downloads or executions by SGTool.exe or related components. Inspect DNS resolution logs for unusual redirections to malicious servers.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could hijack your network traffic to replace legitimate updates with malware. This could lead to unauthorized code execution on your system, potentially installing spyware, stealing data, or giving attackers control over your device. Users in Asia and Europe were previously targeted with malware like DarkVigil.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for sensitive health information. Failure to secure communications may result in non-compliance penalties and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Sogou Input Method to version 16.10 or later, which enforces HTTPS and certificate pinning. Block or monitor outbound connections to known malicious IPs or domains associated with this attack. Review system logs for signs of unauthorized file modifications or executions.
