Executive Summary

This is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) vulnerability in Camaleon CMS versions before 2.9.2. It allows authenticated users with category management permissions for one Post Type to modify or delete categories from other Post Types by manipulating category IDs in requests. The issue occurs because the system performs a global category lookup instead of restricting access to the authorized Post Type.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor HTTP requests to the Admin::CategoriesController endpoints for unauthorized category modifications. Check for requests where a user with access to one post type attempts to modify or delete categories from another post type by manipulating category IDs. Review logs for suspicious activity such as repeated failed attempts or unexpected category changes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with limited permissions could rename or delete categories they should not have access to. This could disrupt website organization, remove important content classifications, or cause data loss. The impact is limited to category management functions but could affect site structure and user experience.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance by allowing unauthorized modifications to data categorization. For GDPR, improper data classification could affect lawful processing. For HIPAA, unauthorized changes to medical record categories might violate integrity requirements. The severity depends on how categories are used in the specific implementation.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Camaleon CMS to version 2.9.2 or later to patch the vulnerability. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the Admin::CategoriesController endpoints and implement strict permission checks to ensure users can only modify categories within their authorized post types. Monitor for any signs of exploitation and review user activity logs for unauthorized changes.
