Description

Netpbm before 10.86.51, 11.02.30, and 11.15.08 contains an integer overflow vulnerability in winicontopam that allows attackers to corrupt heap memory via oversized ICO/CUR dimensions. Attackers can supply a crafted icon file with width or height above 32767, wrapping int16_t loop counters into negative row buffer indices to cause crashes or potential code execution.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow in the Netpbm image processing suite, specifically in the winicontopam utility. It occurs when processing ICO or CUR files with dimensions exceeding 32767 pixels. The overflow causes int16_t loop counters to wrap into negative values, corrupting heap memory and potentially leading to crashes or arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Netpbm version is below 10.86.51, 11.02.30, or 11.15.08. Run `winicontopam --version` to verify the installed version. Test with crafted ICO/CUR files exceeding 32767 dimensions to observe crashes or memory corruption.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this by providing a maliciously crafted icon file, causing crashes or executing arbitrary code on your system. This could lead to data loss, system compromise, or unauthorized access if the vulnerable Netpbm version is used to process such files.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling arbitrary code execution or memory corruption through crafted image files. Unauthorized code execution may lead to data breaches or unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Netpbm to versions 10.86.51, 11.02.30, or 11.15.08 or later. Avoid processing untrusted ICO/CUR files with large dimensions until patched. Monitor for crashes or memory corruption when handling such files.
