Description

Netpbm before 10.86.51, 11.x before 11.02.30, and 11.03 before 11.15.08 contains a heap buffer overflow in xpmtoppm caused by an unvalidated characters-per-pixel value in the XPM header. Attackers can supply a crafted XPM file with characters-per-pixel greater than 3 to overrun fixed 3-byte colorName hash entries, causing crashes or potentially code execution.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap buffer overflow in the xpmtoppm utility of Netpbm, caused by an unvalidated characters-per-pixel value in the XPM file header. Attackers can craft an XPM file with a characters-per-pixel value greater than 3, which overflows fixed 3-byte colorName hash entries. This leads to crashes or potential code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect XPM files on your system for malformed headers with characters-per-pixel values greater than 3. Use commands like 'file' to check file types and 'grep' to search for suspicious XPM headers. Monitor crashes in xpmtoppm processes as they may indicate exploitation attempts.

Impact Analysis

If you process untrusted XPM files with vulnerable Netpbm versions, this flaw could crash the xpmtoppm utility or allow arbitrary code execution. This may lead to denial of service or system compromise if exploited maliciously.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized code execution or data exfiltration if exploited. A heap buffer overflow in xpmtoppm may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements under GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Netpbm to versions 10.86.51, 11.02.30, or 11.15.08 or later. Disable or restrict access to xpmtoppm if updates are not immediately possible. Scan systems for suspicious XPM files and monitor for crashes or unusual activity in xpmtoppm processes.
