Integer Overflow in Netpbm Leading to Heap Buffer Overflow

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-120436, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Netpbm before 10.86.51, 11.x before 11.02.30, and 11.03 before 11.15.08 contains an integer overflow in jbigtopnm that causes heap buffer overflow when computing output buffer size. Attackers can supply a crafted multi-plane JBIG file with large header dimensions so jbg_dec_merge_planes() overflows the undersized buffer, causing crashes or potentially code execution.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap buffer overflow in Netpbm's jbigtopnm tool caused by an integer overflow when calculating output buffer size. Attackers can exploit it by providing a crafted multi-plane JBIG file with large header dimensions, causing jbg_dec_merge_planes() to overflow an undersized buffer. This may lead to crashes or potential code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect systems running vulnerable Netpbm versions (before 10.86.51, 11.02.30, or 11.15.08) for the presence of jbigtopnm. Check installed versions using package managers like 'dpkg -l | grep netpbm' or 'rpm -qa | grep netpbm'. If installed, test with a crafted JBIG file to observe crashes or memory corruption.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected Netpbm versions, an attacker could exploit this flaw by tricking you into processing a malicious JBIG file. This could crash the jbigtopnm tool or allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system, potentially leading to data theft or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling arbitrary code execution through crafted JBIG files. If exploited, it may lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or exfiltration, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Netpbm to patched versions (10.86.51 or later, 11.02.30 or later, 11.15.08 or later). If updates are unavailable, disable jbigtopnm or restrict access to JBIG file processing. Monitor for crashes or unusual memory usage in image processing workflows.
