Description

ape-volo-admin before 3.6.1 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to forge administrator tokens using a hardcoded JWT signing key in appsettings.json. Attackers can sign tokens offline with the jti claim set to the seeded administrator id to gain full API control over users, roles, permissions and data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in ape-volo-admin versions before 3.6.1. It occurs because the application uses a hardcoded JWT signing key in its configuration file (appsettings.json). Attackers can exploit this by forging administrator tokens offline, signing them with the hardcoded key and setting the jti claim to a predefined administrator ID. This grants full API control, allowing manipulation of users, roles, permissions, and data without authentication.

Detection Guidance

Check for hardcoded JWT signing keys in appsettings.json files. Search for the key '5ixKD0BkJxYYroZTvdPs3w9NWRoiUacN' in configuration files or environment variables. Inspect JWT tokens for the jti claim set to '163519427764300' which indicates forged tokens.

Commands: grep -r '5ixKD0BkJxYYroZTvdPs3w9NWRoiUacN' /path/to/app, grep -r 'jti.*163519427764300' /path/to/logs, and review JWT tokens in network traffic for suspicious claims.

Impact Analysis

If you use ape-volo-admin versions before 3.6.1, attackers could gain full administrative access to your system. This includes creating, modifying, or deleting users, changing roles and permissions, and accessing sensitive data. The impact is severe as it bypasses all authentication mechanisms, allowing complete control over the application and its data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to sensitive data. GDPR mandates strict access controls and data protection, while HIPAA requires safeguards for protected health information. The authentication bypass could lead to data breaches, resulting in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to version 3.6.1 or later to remove the hardcoded key. Replace the JWT signing key with a unique, randomly generated secret per deployment. Ensure tokens are bound to server-side sessions and implement key rotation mechanisms.

Revoke all existing tokens and invalidate sessions. Monitor for unauthorized API access attempts. Review and restrict API endpoints to prevent unauthorized administrative actions.
