Description

Outline before 1.12.0 contains an improper access control vulnerability that allows unauthenticated users to read unpublished documents because the share loader ignores unpublished status. Attackers holding an existing share link can query shares.info, documents.info, or the /s/ share routes to read withdrawn content, while shares.revoke returns 404 and blocks revocation.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper access control flaw in Outline versions before 1.12.0. It allows unauthenticated users to read unpublished documents through existing public share links. The share loader ignores the unpublished status of documents, so attackers can access withdrawn content via share links even after the document is unpublished. Revoking access fails because the revocation endpoint returns a 404 error.

Detection Guidance

Check if unpublished documents are accessible via share links by querying shares.info, documents.info, or /s/ routes with an existing share link. Verify if revoking shares via shares.revoke returns a 404 error.

Impact Analysis

If you use Outline before version 1.12.0, unpublished or withdrawn documents may be accessible to unauthorized users via share links. Attackers can read sensitive or confidential information without authentication. Document owners and admins cannot revoke these shares while the document is unpublished, increasing exposure risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's confidentiality requirements. Unpublished documents may contain personal or protected health information accessible without consent, risking non-compliance and potential legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Outline to version 1.12.0 or later to patch the vulnerability. Ensure all unpublished documents are reviewed and properly secured after the upgrade.
