Description

Warracker before 1.0.4 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in its Paperless-ngx integration that allows an authenticated, non-administrative user to bypass document ownership restrictions by searching for and linking another user's private document ID to a warranty they own using the `other` document type. Attackers can exploit insufficient authorization checks in the `paperless_search_and_link()` and `serve_paperless_document()` route handlers in file_routes.py to retrieve and disclose private documents belonging to another user via the shared Paperless-ngx API credential, resulting in unauthorized read access and confidentiality loss.

Executive Summary

Warracker before 1.0.4 has a missing authorization flaw in its Paperless-ngx integration. An authenticated non-admin user can bypass document ownership checks by linking another user's private document ID to their own warranty using the 'other' document type. This happens due to weak authorization in the paperless_search_and_link() and serve_paperless_document() functions, allowing unauthorized access to private documents via the shared Paperless-ngx API credential.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check Warracker versions before 1.0.4 and inspect file_routes.py for the paperless_search_and_link() and serve_paperless_document() functions. Look for unauthorized document linking via the 'other' document type in Paperless-ngx integrations.

Impact Analysis

If you use Warracker versions before 1.0.4, an attacker with a normal account who owns a warranty could access your private documents, such as receipts or invoices, without permission. They can link your private document to their warranty and retrieve its contents, leading to confidentiality loss. This requires no victim interaction and persists as long as the document remains linked.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to private documents, leading to confidentiality breaches. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. Unauthorized disclosure risks legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Warracker to version 1.0.4 or later to patch the vulnerability. Review document access logs for suspicious linking activities and revoke unauthorized document associations. Ensure strict authorization checks are enforced in Paperless-ngx integrations.
