Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw in Otter Wiki versions before 2.26.2. It exists in the OtterwikiMdRenderer.block_code function, allowing attackers who can edit pages to inject malicious scripts. The attack works by placing HTML inside a math fenced code block, which is then rendered unescaped and executes for every viewer of the page.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect Otter Wiki pages for malicious scripts in math fenced code blocks. Check for HTML tags or scripts in rendered content. Review page edit history for unauthorized changes.

Impact Analysis

If you use Otter Wiki before version 2.26.2, attackers could steal session cookies, perform actions on your behalf, or redirect you to malicious sites. Even anonymous users might exploit this under default settings. The impact includes unauthorized access to user accounts and potential data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. Organizations using affected Otter Wiki versions may face compliance violations, potential fines, and reputational damage due to insufficient protection against XSS attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Otter Wiki to version 2.26.2 or later. Restrict page editing permissions to trusted users. Sanitize user input to prevent HTML/script injection. Monitor for suspicious page edits or unusual activity.
