Description

The Real Testimonials – Testimonial Slider, Collect Customer Reviews and Video Testimonials plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'tpro_client_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.1.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation requires an administrator to publish the submitted testimonial, trigger the Show Preview AJAX handler, and save an Update, which canonicalizes and persists the attacker-controlled payload as the Manage View title β€” matching the plugin's standard moderation workflow. Successful exploitation additionally requires an action by an administrator β€” the attacker cannot trigger the vulnerability on their own.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'tpro_client_name' parameter due to poor input sanitization. The attack requires an administrator to publish the testimonial and trigger specific actions, which then executes the script when users access the page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking for unauthorized scripts in testimonials or page titles. Inspect WordPress pages for unexpected JavaScript in testimonial content or titles. Review the plugin's Manage View section for suspicious entries in the 'tpro_client_name' parameter.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, redirect to malicious sites, or deface your website. It may also allow unauthorized data access if combined with other vulnerabilities. The impact depends on the injected script's purpose.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity principle or HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Real Testimonials plugin to the latest version if available. Remove any unauthorized testimonials or scripts. Implement strict input validation for user-submitted content. Monitor WordPress admin activity for unexpected changes to testimonials or titles.
