Description

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via theme_opts Parameter via User Profile in all versions up to, and including, 4.5.16 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation requires the host theme to have registered a Redux field of a CSS-emitting type (such as link_color, border, or typography) with an output CSS selector, as only the field types 'spinner', 'slider', 'color', and 'date' receive per-type value validation that would block the entity-encoded payload.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Redux Framework WordPress plugin affecting versions up to 4.5.16. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the theme_opts parameter in user profiles due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts that execute when users access infected pages. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data, defacement of websites, or redirection to malicious sites. The impact depends on user privileges and the nature of the injected payload.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, which may violate GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using the vulnerable plugin may face compliance violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the Redux Framework plugin to the latest version that includes the fixes from pull request #4124.
  • Review and sanitize any user input fields, particularly those related to theme_opts or multi_media, to prevent XSS attacks.
  • Implement strict input validation and output escaping for CSS-emitting fields like link_color, border, or typography.
  • Restrict subscriber-level access to only necessary permissions to reduce attack surface.
