Description

The iubenda | All-in-one Compliance for GDPR / CCPA Cookie Consent + more plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting in versions up to, and including, 3.13.6. This is due to the way iubendaParser::parse_comments() re-processes HTML inside IUB-COOKIE-BLOCK markers through the bundled simple_html_dom parser after WordPress has already KSES-filtered the saved comment: simple_html_dom's remove_noise() stores <code> bodies under a deterministic key ('___noise___ 1000') and restore_noise() later substitutes any matching substring back into attribute values WITHOUT re-escaping, allowing a quote-breaking payload stashed in an allowed <code> element to be injected into an allowed <abbr title="___noise___ 1000"> attribute at render time. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page, after an administrator approves the first (otherwise moderated) comment under WordPress's default comment_previously_approved setting.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the iubenda WordPress plugin up to version 3.13.6. It occurs because the plugin reprocesses HTML comments after WordPress has already filtered them. An attacker can inject malicious scripts via allowed HTML elements like code tags, which later execute when users view pages with approved comments.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to WordPress plugins and requires manual inspection of plugin code and comment handling. Check for the iubenda plugin version 3.13.6 or lower. Review WordPress comment moderation settings and inspect stored comments for malicious scripts in IUB-COOKIE-BLOCK markers. No direct network commands detect this; focus on plugin version and comment content analysis.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject arbitrary scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users access the infected pages, potentially stealing cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. It requires an administrator to approve a malicious comment first under default WordPress settings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could compromise user data protection under GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized script execution. It may lead to data breaches, violating compliance requirements for handling personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the iubenda plugin to the latest version beyond 3.13.6 immediately to patch the XSS vulnerability. Disable comment moderation temporarily if possible until the update is applied.
