SQL Injection in Advanced Shipment Tracking for WooCommerce

Description

The Advanced Shipment Tracking for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the `tracking_provider` parameter of the `POST /wp-json/wc-ast/v3/orders/<order_id>/shipment-trackings` REST endpoint in all versions up to, and including, 3.9. This is due to insufficient escaping on the user-supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query in `WC_Advanced_Shipment_Tracking_Admin::get_provider_slug_from_name()` β€” the value is concatenated directly into the format string of `$wpdb->prepare()` rather than bound as a parameter, bypassing parameterised-query protections. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Shop Manager-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into the already-existing query that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL Injection flaw in the Advanced Shipment Tracking for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress. It exists due to improper handling of the tracking_provider parameter in a REST endpoint. Attackers with Shop Manager-level access or higher can exploit this to inject malicious SQL queries into the database, potentially extracting sensitive information.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires authenticated access with Shop Manager-level permissions or higher. Check WordPress logs for suspicious REST API requests to /wp-json/wc-ast/v3/orders/<order_id>/shipment-trackings with unusual parameters. Monitor database queries for unexpected patterns or errors in the WooCommerce shipment tracking tables.

Impact Analysis

If you use this plugin, an attacker with sufficient access could steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as customer information, order details, or other confidential data. They could also manipulate or delete database records, leading to data loss or corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Advanced Shipment Tracking for WooCommerce plugin to the latest version immediately. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily until a patch is released. Restrict Shop Manager and higher-level user roles to trusted personnel only.
