Description

The Photo Engine (Media Organizer & Lightroom) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'hierarchy[].name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 6.5.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable by Subscribers because the /?wplr-sync-api endpoint authenticates solely via wplr_auth_token usermeta with no capability check, and the current user's token is exposed on every admin page via localized script data due to a commented-out screen-condition guard.

Executive Summary

The Photo Engine plugin for WordPress has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to improper input sanitization in the 'hierarchy[].name' parameter. This allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access to inject malicious scripts into pages. The vulnerability exists because the plugin fails to properly sanitize user input and escape output.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized script injections in WordPress pages by inspecting the 'hierarchy[].name' parameter values in the Photo Engine plugin. Look for admin pages exposing wplr_auth_token usermeta without capability checks.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject scripts that run when users access infected pages. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. Since the attack requires only subscriber-level access, it lowers the barrier for exploitation compared to higher-privilege attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations if user data is compromised through such attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Photo Engine plugin to the latest version beyond 6.5.7. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access to the /?wplr-sync-api endpoint. Implement input sanitization for the 'hierarchy[].name' parameter.
