Description

The AI Alt Text Generator plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 2.7.0. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to modify the alt text, and optionally the title, caption, and description of arbitrary attachments owned by other users. Exploiting this vulnerability requires a Contributor-level account to retrieve the nonce from the page source of post.php, post-new.php, or upload.php; additionally, overwriting post_title, post_excerpt, and post_content requires the plugin's set_title, set_caption, or set_description options to be enabled.

Executive Summary

The AI Alt Text Generator WordPress plugin up to version 2.7.0 has an authorization bypass flaw. It fails to verify user permissions before allowing actions, letting unauthenticated attackers modify alt text and other media attributes for attachments owned by other users. Exploiting this requires a Contributor account to retrieve a nonce from certain pages.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could change alt text, titles, captions, or descriptions of your media files without permission. This could misrepresent content, affect SEO, or lead to misinformation if used maliciously. Requires minimal access (Contributor role) to exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the AI Alt Text Generator plugin to the latest version beyond 2.7.0 immediately. If updating is not possible, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is available.
