Assigner: Wordfence

Description

The Optimole – Optimize Images | Convert WebP & AVIF | CDN & Lazy Load | Image Optimization plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.2.18 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the comment to be approved by an administrator and for the affected post to contain at least one iframe or video element (e.g., a core Video block), which is sufficient under default plugin settings where video lazy loading is enabled.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Optimole WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'comment' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Optimole plugin for stored XSS via the 'comment' parameter. Inspect comments in posts containing iframes or videos. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for suspicious scripts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to steal user session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. This requires an administrator to approve the malicious comment and the affected post to contain an iframe or video element.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Optimole plugin to the latest version beyond 4.2.18. Disable comment approval for untrusted users. Sanitize user input and escape output in WordPress. Monitor for unauthorized script injections.
