Memory Leak in MongoDB C Driver via Compressed Responses

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-120678, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-03

Last updated on: 2026-11-03

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

A memory management flaw in the MongoDB C Driver's handling of compressed responses may cause the client library to hold on to memory that is never released. An unauthenticated party that controls the database endpoint a client application connects to may cause repeated, unbounded memory growth in that application, which may result in the application becoming unavailable. No credentials, transport security settings, or user interaction are required.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a memory management flaw in the MongoDB C Driver where compressed responses are not properly released. An attacker controlling the database endpoint can cause unbounded memory growth in client applications, leading to potential unavailability of the application.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for abnormal memory usage in applications using the MongoDB C Driver. Check for processes consuming excessive memory unexpectedly. Use system monitoring tools like 'top', 'htop', or 'ps' to observe memory usage patterns. Look for applications linked to the MongoDB C Driver that show unbounded memory growth over time.

Impact Analysis

If you use applications relying on the MongoDB C Driver, an attacker could exploit this to crash or slow down your application by consuming excessive memory. No authentication or user interaction is needed for the attack.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the MongoDB C Driver to the latest patched version. If updating is not possible, restrict network access to MongoDB endpoints using firewalls or network segmentation. Monitor affected applications for memory leaks and restart them if abnormal memory growth is detected. Consider disabling compression in client configurations if the patch is not available.
