Description

The Real Testimonials – Testimonial Slider, Collect Customer Reviews and Video Testimonials plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'tpro_client_testimonial' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.1.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation requires an administrator to approve the pending testimonial through standard moderation and the target page to load the WordPress Interactivity runtime (e.g. a theme or block that enqueues @wordpress/interactivity).

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'tpro_client_testimonial' parameter. The issue stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, enabling stored cross-site scripting (XSS). Exploitation requires an administrator to approve the testimonial and the target page to load the WordPress Interactivity runtime.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Real Testimonials plugin versions up to 4.1.0. Check for unauthorized JavaScript in testimonial content via the 'tpro_client_testimonial' parameter. Review pending testimonials for suspicious scripts and verify if the WordPress Interactivity runtime is loaded on affected pages.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal sensitive user data, hijack sessions, or deface websites. Users visiting infected pages may have their credentials or personal information compromised. The vulnerability requires administrative approval but poses risks to both site owners and visitors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. Organizations may face fines or legal consequences if exploited, as it compromises data confidentiality and integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Real Testimonials plugin to the latest version beyond 4.1.0. Remove any unauthorized testimonials containing scripts. Disable the WordPress Interactivity runtime if not required. Monitor for unusual activity in testimonial submissions.
