Description

The Real Testimonials – Testimonial Slider, Collect Customer Reviews and Video Testimonials plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'tpro_client_image (JPEG IPTC caption) + tpro_client_testimonial ([gallery] shortcode)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.1.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires an administrator to have the display block configured with the Strip All HTML Tags option disabled, which is the plugin's native setting for rendering formatted testimonial content, and to have approved the submitted testimonials.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into testimonials via the JPEG IPTC caption and gallery shortcode parameters. The issue stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, enabling stored cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Real Testimonials plugin versions up to 4.1.0. Inspect testimonial content for unusual scripts or HTML tags in the tpro_client_image and tpro_client_testimonial parameters. Review admin settings for the Strip All HTML Tags option.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could execute arbitrary web scripts in pages viewed by users if an administrator has disabled HTML tag stripping. This could lead to session hijacking, defacement, or theft of sensitive user data like cookies or credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing user data through script injection or HIPAA by compromising protected health information if testimonials contain such data. Non-compliance risks fines and legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Real Testimonials plugin to the latest version. Enable Strip All HTML Tags in settings. Remove any suspicious testimonials. Monitor for unauthorized script injections in web pages.
