Description

A flaw was found in hivex. By supplying a specially crafted Windows registry hive file, an attacker can trigger an out-of-bounds memory read when hivex parses registry values containing malformed large data block lists. This issue can cause the application processing the registry file to crash, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds memory read flaw in hivex. It occurs when parsing Windows registry hive files containing malformed large data block lists. Attackers can exploit this by providing a specially crafted registry file to crash the application, causing a Denial of Service (DoS).

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves parsing malformed Windows registry hive files with hivex. Detection requires analyzing registry files for large data block lists. Use hivex tools like hivexsh or hivexregedit to inspect registry hives for irregularities. Check logs for crashes in applications using hivex.

Impact Analysis

If you process Windows registry hive files using hivex, this flaw could allow attackers to crash your application, leading to service disruption. This is particularly risky for systems relying on registry parsing for critical operations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update hivex to the latest version to patch the flaw. Avoid processing untrusted registry hive files. Restrict access to registry hive files to trusted users only. Monitor systems for crashes or unusual behavior in applications using hivex.
