Description

A flaw was found in RESTEasy's default exception mapper. When an unhandled exception other than a WebApplicationException is not handled by an application exception mapper, RESTEasy returns the exception's localized message in the HTTP 500 response body. A remote unauthenticated attacker who can trigger such an exception may obtain information contained in that message. The behavior was reproduced with RESTEasy 7.0.2.Final.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-120971 is an information disclosure vulnerability in the RESTEasy framework. When an unhandled exception occurs, RESTEasy's default exception mapper returns the exception's localized message in the HTTP 500 response body. This could expose sensitive details to remote unauthenticated attackers.

Detection Guidance

Monitor HTTP 500 error responses for detailed exception messages in RESTEasy applications. Check application logs for unhandled exceptions that expose localized error details. Use network traffic analysis tools to inspect response bodies for sensitive data leaks.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to obtain sensitive information from error messages, potentially including system details, internal data, or other confidential information. This may lead to further attacks or data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA by exposing sensitive personal or health data through error messages. Organizations may face penalties for failing to protect such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply patches or updates from RESTEasy once available. Configure custom exception mappers to suppress detailed error messages in HTTP 500 responses. Review and sanitize exception messages in application code to avoid exposing sensitive information.
