Description

SQL::Abstract::Tree versions before 2.000001_04 for Perl allow cross-site scripting via unescaped SQL text and bind values in the html profile. The html profile wraps keywords and placeholders in span elements and breaks lines with br elements, so its output is meant to go into a page as is. The format method does not HTML-escape the SQL text or the bind values it fills in around that markup. An application that renders SQL formatted with the html profile, such as in a debug panel or query log, allows an attacker who controls a bind value or part of the SQL text to embed JavaScript in the page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a cross-site scripting (XSS) issue in SQL::Abstract::Tree versions before 2.000001_04 for Perl. The html profile feature formats SQL queries for display in web pages by wrapping keywords and placeholders in HTML span elements and adding line breaks. However, it fails to escape SQL text and bind values, allowing attackers who control part of the SQL or bind values to inject malicious JavaScript code into the output.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect applications using SQL::Abstract::Tree versions before 2.000001_04 that render SQL queries in debug panels or logs. Check if the html profile is enabled and if SQL text or bind values are rendered without HTML escaping.

Impact Analysis

If you use the html profile to display SQL queries in a web page, such as in a debug panel or query log, an attacker could inject JavaScript code. This could lead to theft of session cookies, defacement of the page, or other malicious actions performed on behalf of the user viewing the page.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SQL::Abstract::Tree to version 2.000001_04 or later. Ensure the html_escape option is enabled by default or explicitly set in your application configuration to escape SQL text and bind values.
