FreeRDP 3.0.0-3.32.2 Assertion Failure in ARM Gateway Response Parser

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-121390, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.2 built with WITH_AAD=ON contains a reachable assertion because its ARM gateway response parser accepts a missing or non-string redirectedServerCert field and passes a null buffer to the certificate parser. A malicious or malformed user-selected gateway can return such a response to abort the client process.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects FreeRDP versions 3.0.0 through 3.32.1 when compiled with WITH_AAD=ON. It occurs because the ARM gateway response parser fails to properly validate the redirectedServerCert field. When this field is missing or not a string, the parser passes a null buffer to the certificate parser, triggering an assertion failure that crashes the FreeRDP client process.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your FreeRDP version is between 3.0.0 and 3.32.1 and compiled with WITH_AAD=ON. Run 'xfreerdp --version' to verify the version. Monitor network traffic for Azure Active Directory (AAD) gateway responses missing the redirectedServerCert field.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability causes the FreeRDP client to crash when a user connects to a malicious or malformed Azure Active Directory gateway. This results in a denial of service as the client process terminates. The crash requires user interaction to select the malicious gateway but does not allow authentication bypass, data disclosure, or data modification.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts availability by causing client crashes. It does not directly lead to data breaches or unauthorized access, so it likely has minimal direct impact on compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA. However, repeated crashes could disrupt operations requiring remote desktop access.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.2 or later. Disable AAD integration if not required by recompiling without WITH_AAD=ON. Avoid connecting to untrusted gateways until patched.
