Description

FreeRDP from 3.0.0 before 3.32.2 contains a file descriptor leak in parallel_process_irp_create that fails to close previous descriptors on repeated IRP_MJ_CREATE requests. A hostile RDP server with parallel-device redirection enabled can send repeated CREATE requests to exhaust the client descriptor table and crash the process.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-121391 is a file descriptor leak in FreeRDP versions 3.0.0 to 3.32.1. When a user connects to a malicious RDP server with parallel-device redirection enabled, the server sends repeated CREATE requests. The client opens local parallel paths for each request but fails to close previous file descriptors, causing a leak. This exhausts the client's file descriptor table, leading to a crash.

Detection Guidance

Monitor FreeRDP client processes for excessive file descriptor usage. Use commands like 'lsof -p <PID>' to check open descriptors or 'ls /proc/<PID>/fd | wc -l' to count them. High descriptor counts without corresponding legitimate activity may indicate exploitation.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can crash the FreeRDP client process due to file descriptor exhaustion. This requires user interaction to connect to a malicious RDP server with parallel-device redirection enabled. The crash is a segmentation fault, not a code execution or memory corruption issue. No system-wide effects beyond the client process are observed.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.2 or later. Disable parallel-device redirection in client configurations if not required. Avoid connecting to untrusted RDP servers until patched.
