Description

FreeRDP before 3.32.2 contains a heap buffer over-read vulnerability in save_png_to_buffer() that allows malicious RDP servers to leak client memory by sending 16 bpp DIB clipboard data. Attackers can offer a CF_DIB BI_BITFIELDS image that, when converted to PNG for a local application, embeds client heap bytes into the clipboard image.

Executive Summary

FreeRDP before version 3.32.2 has a heap buffer over-read flaw in the save_png_to_buffer() function. Malicious RDP servers can exploit this by sending 16 bpp DIB clipboard data. When converted to PNG for local apps, the image embeds client heap memory bytes, leaking sensitive information.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking FreeRDP versions and monitoring for suspicious clipboard data. Use 'xfreerdp --version' or 'apt list --installed | grep freerdp' to check FreeRDP versions. Monitor network traffic for RDP connections using tools like Wireshark with filters for clipboard-related traffic.

Impact Analysis

If you use FreeRDP versions before 3.32.2, an attacker controlling an RDP server could read parts of your system's memory. This may expose sensitive data like passwords or personal information processed by your RDP client.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's confidentiality requirements. Organizations using vulnerable FreeRDP versions may face compliance risks due to potential data leaks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update FreeRDP to version 3.32.2 or later. Disable clipboard redirection in RDP sessions if not required. Restrict RDP server access to trusted networks only. Monitor for unusual memory usage or crashes in FreeRDP processes.
