Description

FreeRDP before 3.32.2 contains a cross-thread use-after-free vulnerability in the freerdp-proxy dyn-channel-dump module during session teardown. A malicious RDP target can send dynamic channel data while the front client disconnects, letting the client thread read freed ChannelData and crash the proxy process.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-121398 is a use-after-free vulnerability in FreeRDP versions before 3.32.2. It occurs in the freerdp-proxy dyn-channel-dump module during session teardown. A malicious RDP target sends dynamic channel data while the front client disconnects, causing the client thread to read freed ChannelData memory and crash the proxy process.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring FreeRDP proxy processes for crashes during session teardown, especially when the dyn-channel-dump module is loaded. Check proxy logs for heap-use-after-free errors or segmentation faults. Use tools like Valgrind or AddressSanitizer to detect memory corruption in freerdp-proxy when dynamic channel data is processed during disconnection.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause the FreeRDP proxy process to crash due to a memory-safety failure. While code execution and information disclosure were not demonstrated, the crash could disrupt RDP proxy services and lead to denial-of-service conditions for affected sessions.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.2 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable the dyn-channel-dump module in FreeRDP proxy configurations. Avoid using dynamic channel features with untrusted RDP targets until patched. Monitor proxy processes for crashes or memory errors as a sign of exploitation.
