Description

FreeRDP before 3.32.2 fails to bound server-supplied target dimensions and output origin in RDPGFX MAPSURFACETOSCALEDOUTPUT PDUs, allowing malicious RDP servers to abort X11 clients. Attackers can map a surface to oversized scaled output, triggering checked UINT16 cast or freerdp_image_scale stride assertion failures that terminate the client.

Executive Summary

FreeRDP before version 3.32.2 has a vulnerability where it does not properly limit server-supplied dimensions and output origin in RDPGFX MAPSURFACETOSCALEDOUTPUT PDUs. This allows a malicious RDP server to crash X11 clients by mapping a surface to an oversized scaled output, causing checked UINT16 cast or image scale stride assertion failures that terminate the client.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring for abnormal RDP server behavior, such as sending oversized surface dimensions or invalid output origins. Check FreeRDP logs for assertion failures or client crashes during RDPGFX MAPSURFACETOSCALEDOUTPUT PDU processing. Inspect network traffic for malformed RDP packets targeting these PDUs.

Impact Analysis

If you use FreeRDP in an environment where you connect to untrusted RDP servers, an attacker controlling such a server could exploit this flaw to crash your X11 client application, disrupting your remote desktop session.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.2 or later to address the issue. Avoid connecting to untrusted RDP servers. Implement network-level controls to filter malformed RDP packets. Monitor for client crashes or log entries indicating failed assertions related to surface scaling.
