Parse Server Object Update Serialization Flaw Leading to DoS

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-121414, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-03

Last updated on: 2026-11-03

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

Parse Server before 8.6.110 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.6-alpha.2 fails to contain a serialization error when an object update uses a dot notation key targeting a pointer field's object identifier on a class with an afterSave trigger. Attackers, including unauthenticated clients when objects are writable without a session, can send such an update to crash the Node process.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Parse Server allows an attacker to crash the server by sending an object update using dot notation that targets a pointer field's object identifier in a class with an afterSave trigger. The server fails to handle this properly, causing a serialization error that terminates the Node process, leading to a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Check Parse Server version with: npm list parse-server. If version is below 8.6.110 or 9.0.0 below 9.10.6-alpha.2, the system is vulnerable. Monitor server logs for crashes during object updates using dot notation targeting pointer fields with afterSave triggers.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can disrupt service by crashing the Parse Server, making it unavailable for all users until the server restarts. Attackers can exploit it without authentication if the targeted object is writable without a session, causing widespread downtime and potential data access issues.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability, which could lead to violations of compliance requirements for uptime and data access, such as GDPR's data processing timelines or HIPAA's availability standards. Downtime may result in non-compliance if critical data becomes inaccessible during outages.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Parse Server to version 8.6.110 or 9.10.6-alpha.2 or later. Alternatively, add a beforeSave trigger to reject updates targeting pointer objectId fields or remove afterSave triggers from affected classes.
