Description

SurrealDB before 3.3.0 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in surrealdb-core KV backends that pass borrowed transaction state into affinitypool::spawn_local closures relying on future Drop for safety. Rust embedders that leak a dispatched future (e.g. via mem::forget) and drop the transaction cause pool workers to read and write freed memory, risking crashes or memory corruption.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

SurrealDB before version 3.3.0 has a use-after-free vulnerability in its KV backends. This occurs when borrowed transaction state is passed into closures that rely on Rust's future Drop mechanism for safety. If a future is leaked (e.g., via mem::forget) and the transaction is dropped, pool workers may access freed memory, leading to crashes or memory corruption.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could cause application crashes, data corruption, or unexpected behavior in systems using SurrealDB versions before 3.3.0. Attackers might exploit it to execute arbitrary code or escalate privileges if they can trigger the conditions leading to memory corruption.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SurrealDB to version 3.3.0 or later to address the use-after-free vulnerability in KV backends.
