Description

SurrealDB from 3.1.0 before 3.3.0 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability that allows record users to infer restricted field values because the streaming planner uses indexes on fields with restrictive SELECT permissions. Attackers can issue full-text MATCHES, compound B-tree, or HNSW KNN queries against restricted fields to learn which records contain guessed values or nearest vectors.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in SurrealDB versions 3.1.0 to 3.2.9 allows authenticated users to infer restricted field values through queries. The streaming index planner incorrectly uses indexes on fields with restrictive SELECT permissions, enabling attackers to issue full-text MATCHES, compound B-tree, or HNSW KNN queries against restricted fields to learn which records contain guessed values or nearest vectors.

Detection Guidance

Check SurrealDB version with 'surreal version' command. If version is between 3.1.0 and 3.2.9, the system is vulnerable. Monitor for unusual query patterns involving full-text MATCHES, compound B-tree, or HNSW KNN searches against restricted fields.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to infer sensitive information from restricted fields without direct access. This could lead to unauthorized data exposure, privacy breaches, or information leakage, depending on the nature of the restricted fields in your database.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements such as GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Unauthorized data inference risks breaches of confidentiality and may lead to regulatory penalties or legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SurrealDB to version 3.3.0 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict database access to trusted users only and disable index-based queries on sensitive fields until patched.
