Description

Nodemailer from 3.0.0 before 10.1.4 contains an address parsing vulnerability in addressparser that ends an angle-addr at a '>' inside a quoted local part, comment or domain literal. Attackers can submit addresses that validate as an allowed domain but are delivered to an attacker-controlled domain, bypassing recipient allow lists and disclosing message content.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Nodemailer versions 3.0.0 through 10.1.3. It involves a flaw in the addressparser component where email addresses containing a '>' character inside quoted local parts, comments, or domain literals are incorrectly parsed. Attackers can craft addresses that appear valid but deliver messages to attacker-controlled domains, bypassing recipient allow lists.

Detection Guidance

Check Nodemailer version with: npm list nodemailer. If version is between 3.0.0 and 10.1.3, the system is vulnerable. Review email logs for unexpected RCPT TO commands with domains containing '>' characters.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow unauthorized disclosure of email content by redirecting messages to attacker-controlled domains. Systems using Nodemailer to validate recipient domains may be tricked into sending emails outside intended domains, compromising data confidentiality.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data disclosure, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's confidentiality requirements. Organizations may face compliance breaches if sensitive email content is exposed due to the flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Nodemailer to version 10.1.4 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, implement strict input validation for email addresses to reject any containing '>' characters.
