Executive Summary

This is a high-severity command injection vulnerability in AzuraCast versions 0.23.8 and earlier. It allows station users with Profile permission to execute arbitrary OS commands by injecting shell metacharacters into the stereo_tool_configuration_path or stereo_tool_license_key settings. These inputs are executed via /bin/sh when the station restarts, potentially compromising the entire container.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious modifications in StereoTool configuration files or recent changes to stereo_tool_configuration_path or stereo_tool_license_key settings. Inspect /tmp/ for unexpected files like pwned. Review API logs for unauthorized modifications to backend settings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with Profile permission can gain full container access, including read/write/destroy access to AzuraCast data. They can execute commands like creating files, modifying data, or escalating privileges within the container environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable StereoTool integration immediately. Remove write access to Profile permission users. Update to a patched version if available. Monitor for unauthorized container access or file changes.
