Description

svg-sanitizer from 0.11.0 before 1.1.0 contains an algorithmic complexity denial of service vulnerability in hasInfiniteLoop() and countUse() of the use reference-graph analysis. Attackers can upload a small layered SVG with 15 levels of fanned-out use elements, forcing exponential path enumeration that pins PHP workers for hours.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an algorithmic complexity denial of service in the svg-sanitizer library versions 0.11.0 to 1.1.0. It involves a flaw in the hasInfiniteLoop() and countUse() functions that analyze SVG use element references. Attackers can exploit this by uploading a specially crafted SVG file with 15 layers of nested use elements, causing exponential path enumeration that consumes excessive server resources.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause severe service disruption by consuming excessive CPU and memory resources. PHP workers may become pinned for hours, leading to degraded performance or complete unavailability of web services relying on svg-sanitizer. Even small malicious SVG files can trigger this issue.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade svg-sanitizer to version 1.1.0 or later to address the algorithmic complexity denial of service vulnerability in hasInfiniteLoop() and countUse().
