Description

bbs-go through 4.4.6 contains an improper certificate validation vulnerability that allows network-positioned attackers to intercept SMTP traffic because sendEmail() sets InsecureSkipVerify to true. Attackers can present any certificate to capture SMTP PLAIN auth credentials and read or modify outgoing password-reset and verification emails.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper TLS certificate validation issue in the bbs-go software versions up to 4.4.6. The sendEmail() function disables certificate verification by setting InsecureSkipVerify to true, allowing network attackers to intercept SMTP traffic. Attackers can present any certificate to capture SMTP PLAIN auth credentials and read or modify outgoing password-reset and verification emails.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your bbs-go instance is running version 4.4.6 or earlier. Inspect the email_service.go file for the InsecureSkipVerify: true setting in SMTP configurations. Monitor network traffic for unencrypted or intercepted SMTP connections, especially during password-reset or verification email transmissions.

Impact Analysis

If you use bbs-go versions up to 4.4.6, attackers could intercept your SMTP traffic, steal plaintext credentials, and read or alter emails like password resets or verification messages. This could lead to unauthorized access to accounts or sensitive information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements that mandate secure transmission of sensitive data. GDPR requires protection of personal data during transmission, and HIPAA requires secure handling of protected health information. The lack of certificate validation may result in unauthorized access to such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade bbs-go to a version that removes InsecureSkipVerify: true and properly validates SMTP TLS certificates. Review and update SMTP configurations to enforce certificate validation. Disable SMTP PLAIN auth if possible and use encrypted channels for email transmission.
