Description

An out-of-bounds read in the NTS-KE client response parser (nts_client_process_response_core) in NTPsec before 1.2.4 allows a malicious NTS-KE server to read the client's stack memory, including pointers that defeat ASLR, which the client then sends in cleartext as NTS cookies, via an NTS-KE record whose declared length exceeds the data received.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read flaw in the NTS-KE client response parser of NTPsec versions before 1.2.4. A malicious NTS-KE server can exploit this by sending a response with a declared length exceeding the actual data received. This causes the client to read beyond the intended memory area, including stack memory containing pointers that defeat ASLR. The client then sends these pointers in cleartext as NTS cookies.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows an attacker to read sensitive memory contents from the affected system, including ASLR-protection pointers. This could lead to further exploitation, such as bypassing security mechanisms or gaining unauthorized access to system information. The cleartext transmission of sensitive data (NTS cookies) also increases exposure to interception.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing sensitive data in cleartext, violating confidentiality requirements. GDPR emphasizes data protection and breach notification, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. The flaw could lead to unauthorized data exposure, triggering compliance violations and potential penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade NTPsec to version 1.2.4 or later to address the out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the NTS-KE client response parser.
