Description

The Social Slider Feed – Social Media Feed & Gallery Widgets plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'slidespeed' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.3.8 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The missing current_user_can() check in the Factory framework's connect() dispatcher allows Subscriber-level users to bypass the manage_options capability gate and both harvest a valid wis_edit_feed nonce and overwrite any feed's slidespeed setting, after which the stored payload fires on every public pageview embedding the feed shortcode.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Social Slider Feed WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access to inject malicious scripts via the 'slidespeed' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization. The vulnerability bypasses capability checks, enabling attackers to modify feed settings and execute scripts on pages using the plugin's shortcode.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking WordPress sites using the Social Slider Feed plugin versions up to 2.3.8 for unauthorized script injections in the slidespeed parameter. Inspect pages with the plugin's shortcode for unexpected JavaScript payloads. Review user roles with subscriber-level access for unusual activity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, deface your website, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. Since the payload executes on every pageview with the feed shortcode, all visitors to affected pages are at risk. The attack requires only subscriber-level access, making it accessible to low-privilege users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches by enabling attackers to steal user data or session cookies, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. Websites handling personal or health data must address this to maintain compliance and avoid regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Social Slider Feed plugin to the latest version. Remove or restrict subscriber-level user access to prevent exploitation. Scan WordPress sites for injected scripts in the slidespeed parameter and remove any malicious payloads.
