Executive Summary

TeXlyre versions 0.11.0 to 0.13.4 have a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. Attackers can exploit this by providing malicious LSP or typesetter recipe icons. When victims import these icons, the HTML event handlers execute, allowing persistent access to local projects and repository credentials.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires inspecting TeXlyre installations for versions between 0.11.0 and 0.13.4. Check installed versions with commands like 'texlyre --version' or inspect package managers for TeXlyre packages. Review imported recipes or icons for suspicious HTML event handlers in LSP or typesetter configurations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute malicious scripts in your browser when you import a compromised recipe icon. This can lead to unauthorized access to your local projects and stolen repository credentials, potentially compromising your data and accounts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade TeXlyre to version 0.13.5 or later immediately. Remove or sanitize any imported recipes with untrusted icons containing HTML event handlers. Audit local projects and repository credentials for potential compromise. Disable automatic import of external recipes if not required.
