Cross-Site Scripting in Data::MuForm Perl Module

Description

Data::MuForm versions through 0.05 for Perl render attribute values and option labels into HTML without escaping. process_attrs writes each attribute value into the markup as is. The select, radio group and checkbox group renderers pass each option to it, so an option's value becomes an unescaped attribute. Option and option group labels are also unescaped, the group label inside a label attribute and the others in element content. Any application whose option list is built from data rather than literals, using an options_<field_name> method, a build_options method or a DBIC model, allows attacker-influenced text in an option value or label that can embed JavaScript in rendered pages. Attribute values built from data, such as through element_attr, are affected the same way.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Data::MuForm versions through 0.05 for Perl. It allows unescaped HTML rendering of attribute values and option labels, enabling malicious markup injection. Attackers can embed JavaScript in rendered pages by influencing option values or labels through methods like options_field_name, build_options, or DBIC models.

Detection Guidance

Check Perl applications using Data::MuForm versions through 0.05 for unescaped HTML output in forms. Inspect rendered HTML for option values or labels containing executable scripts or unexpected markup. Review form templates for dynamic option generation from user-controlled data.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks. If your application uses Data::MuForm and builds option lists from untrusted data, attackers could inject malicious scripts into web pages. This could allow them to steal user data, perform actions on behalf of users, or deface your site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling XSS attacks that compromise user data confidentiality. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A successful XSS attack could lead to data breaches, resulting in regulatory penalties and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Data::MuForm to a patched version that escapes option values and labels. If upgrading isn't possible, manually escape all dynamic option values and labels before rendering. Audit applications for forms using select, radio groups, or checkbox groups with dynamic options.
