Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Improper Certificate Validation flaw in WatchGuard AuthPoint Gateway versions below 7.6.0. It allows attackers with a network position between the gateway and local authentication providers to intercept and modify communications using a man-in-the-middle attack.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring network traffic between the AuthPoint Gateway and authentication providers. Use packet capture tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect TLS/SSL handshakes for improper certificate validation. Check for unexpected certificate chains or expired certificates in logs. WatchGuard recommends reviewing network traffic logs for anomalies in authentication provider communications.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could intercept sensitive authentication data exchanged between the AuthPoint Gateway and providers like RADIUS, LDAP, or ADFS. This may lead to unauthorized access to systems or data if credentials are captured or altered during transmission.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, potentially violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations if sensitive data is intercepted or altered due to insufficient certificate validation.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade WatchGuard AuthPoint Gateway to version 7.6.0 or later to address the improper certificate validation flaw. Ensure all authentication providers (RADIUS, LDAP, ADFS) are updated and configured to enforce strict certificate validation. Monitor network traffic for signs of man-in-the-middle attacks and review WatchGuard's official advisories for additional guidance.
