Description

A stack-based buffer overflow in libsnowflakeclient and the Snowflake PHP PDO Driver could, under specific conditions, result in memory corruption during SAML-based authentication. During a native SSO/SAML login flow, the affected drivers may have copied a value taken from the identity provider's HTML response into a fixed-size memory buffer without first validating the length of that value. An attacker who controlled or had compromised the configured identity provider β€” or who was able to redirect the SAML single sign-on endpoint to an attacker-controlled server β€” might have leveraged this by returning an oversized response, potentially resulting in a crash or, in specific circumstances, remote code execution within the context of the application running the library. The fix is available in libsnowflakeclient version 2.11.1 and Snowflake PHP PDO Driver version 4.3.0. Users must manually upgrade.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in libsnowflakeclient and the Snowflake PHP PDO Driver. During SAML-based authentication, the drivers may copy an oversized value from an identity provider's HTML response into a fixed-size buffer without length validation. This could lead to memory corruption, crashes, or remote code execution if exploited by an attacker controlling the identity provider or SAML endpoint.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the versions of libsnowflakeclient and Snowflake PHP PDO Driver. Use commands like 'snowflake-php-pdo-driver --version' and 'libsnowflakeclient --version' to verify if they are below 4.3.0 and 2.11.1 respectively.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to crash the application or execute arbitrary code within the application's context. This may lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or system compromise. Users must upgrade to libsnowflakeclient 2.11.1 or Snowflake PHP PDO Driver 4.3.0 to mitigate the risk.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade libsnowflakeclient to version 2.11.1 or higher and Snowflake PHP PDO Driver to version 4.3.0 or higher. Ensure no SAML identity providers are compromised or redirecting to untrusted servers.
