Description

Parse Server before 8.6.113 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.6-alpha.5 contains a prototype pollution vulnerability when building objects for Cloud Code triggers and LiveQuery, where a dot notation key whose intermediate segment resolves through an inherited member writes onto a process-wide built-in. Clients with write access to an object in a class with a trigger or LiveQuery can corrupt a built-in function, making unrelated requests fail until restart and denying service to all clients and hosted applications.

Executive Summary

This is a prototype pollution vulnerability in Parse Server versions before 8.6.113 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.6-alpha.5. It occurs when building objects for Cloud Code triggers and LiveQuery. Attackers with write access can exploit dot notation keys to corrupt a built-in function by traversing inherited members in the object prototype chain. This causes unrelated requests to fail until the server restarts, denying service to all clients and applications.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Parse Server version is below 8.6.113 or 9.10.6-alpha.5. Use commands like 'npm list parse-server' or inspect your server logs for errors related to prototype pollution or trigger failures.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can cause denial of service for all users of the affected Parse Server instance. Unrelated requests may fail, and the server must be restarted to restore normal operation. Attackers with write access can corrupt shared built-in functions, disrupting service for all clients and hosted applications.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to service disruptions and data processing failures, potentially violating availability requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Downtime may impact data integrity and access controls, requiring immediate remediation to maintain compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Parse Server to version 8.6.113 or 9.10.6-alpha.5 or later. If upgrading is not possible, disable Cloud Code triggers and LiveQuery for affected classes as a temporary mitigation.
