Description

netrek-client-cow through 3.3.3 contains a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in handleSMessage() in short.c that allows malicious servers to overflow a 100-byte stack buffer by sending oversized SP_S_MESSAGE packets. A malicious Netrek server or man-in-the-middle on the plaintext TCP connection can send overlong or unterminated message bodies to write server-controlled bytes onto the stack and crash the client.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-121969 is a stack-based buffer overflow in netrek-client-cow through version 3.3.3. It occurs in the handleSMessage() function in short.c when processing SP_S_MESSAGE packets. A malicious server or man-in-the-middle can send oversized or unterminated message bodies to overflow a 100-byte stack buffer, allowing controlled bytes to be written onto the stack and crash the client.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor for crashes in netrek-client-cow version 3.3.3 or earlier when connecting to untrusted servers. Check for buffer overflow errors like '*** buffer overflow detected ***' in logs. Use network traffic analysis tools to inspect SP_S_MESSAGE packets for oversized or malformed message bodies.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to crash the netrek-client-cow application by sending specially crafted messages. If exploited, it could lead to denial-of-service conditions where the client becomes unresponsive or terminates unexpectedly. Users connecting to untrusted servers or using plaintext TCP connections are at risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it involves a client-side buffer overflow in a game application. GDPR and HIPAA focus on data protection and privacy, while this issue relates to software stability and integrity. However, if exploited, it could lead to denial-of-service or potential unauthorized code execution, which might indirectly impact systems handling sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update netrek-client-cow to the latest patched version to address the buffer overflow in handleSMessage(). Avoid connecting to untrusted Netrek servers. If using a vulnerable version, disable the client until patched or implement network-level protections to filter malformed packets.
