Stored DOM-Based XSS in WP ImageViewer WordPress Plugin

Description

The WP ImageViewer plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'img.alt' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.0.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires a front-end content plugin such as bbPress to be active, as it grants Subscriber-level users the bbp_participant capability needed to publish image-bearing content containing the encoded payload. Exploitation by attackers with contributor-level access and above requires that the site allows Contributors (or higher) to submit image HTML in post content β€” the WordPress default. On a default installation, where that is not configured, the vulnerability requires attackers with custom-level access and above.

Executive Summary

The WP ImageViewer plugin for WordPress has a stored DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'img.alt' parameter. This allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into pages. The attack requires a front-end content plugin like bbPress to be active, which grants users the ability to publish image-bearing content with encoded payloads.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the WP ImageViewer plugin up to version 3.0.2. Check for stored XSS payloads in the 'img.alt' parameter of images. Enable WordPress debugging or use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for malicious scripts in post content.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. If exploited, these scripts could steal user data, session cookies, or perform actions on behalf of users. It primarily affects sites using the WP ImageViewer plugin up to version 3.0.2, especially those with active front-end plugins like bbPress.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, compromising user data and violating privacy regulations like GDPR or HIPAA. If exploited, attackers may gain access to sensitive information, resulting in non-compliance with these standards and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WP ImageViewer plugin to the latest version. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin immediately. Restrict user roles to prevent subscriber-level access from publishing content. Review and sanitize existing posts for malicious scripts.
