Description

BlueprintUE Self-Hosted Edition 4.2.0 before 4.3.4 contains a login rate limit bypass vulnerability in LoginMiddleware.php that keys failed-login counters on case-sensitive usernames. Unauthenticated attackers can vary username casing against case-insensitive MySQL lookups to get extra attempts and brute-force passwords past the per-account lockout.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a login rate limit bypass in BlueprintUE Self-Hosted Edition 4.2.0 before 4.3.4. The application tracks failed login attempts using case-sensitive usernames, but MySQL performs case-insensitive lookups. Attackers can vary username casing to bypass rate limits and brute-force passwords past account lockouts.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor login attempts for unusual patterns where the same account is accessed with varying username casings (e.g., admin, Admin, ADMIN). Check application logs for repeated failed login attempts across different username cases. Use network monitoring tools to identify brute-force attempts targeting the BlueprintUE login endpoint.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could exploit this to bypass login rate limits and attempt brute-force password attacks against user accounts. This increases the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive data or administrative functions if weak passwords are used.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling brute-force attacks that compromise user accounts. Unauthorized access risks data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements under these regulations. The lack of proper rate limiting undermines security controls meant to protect sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade BlueprintUE Self-Hosted Edition to version 4.3.4 or later to patch the vulnerability. If upgrading is not possible, implement a custom middleware or firewall rule to normalize usernames to lowercase before rate-limiting checks. Temporarily enforce stricter IP-based rate limits as a workaround.
