Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an account enumeration issue in blueprintUE Self-Hosted Edition before version 4.3.3. It allows unauthenticated attackers to identify registered email addresses by exploiting the password reset functionality. Attackers can submit emails and compare the redirect targets: valid emails redirect to /reset-password/, while invalid ones redirect to /#popin-forgot_password/. Failed attempts are not rate-limited, enabling unlimited brute-force attempts.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor the password reset endpoint for inconsistent responses. Check if valid emails redirect to /reset-password/ while invalid ones redirect to /#popin-forgot_password/. Test by submitting multiple non-existent emails and observe if rate limiting is bypassed.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to harvest valid email addresses associated with accounts on the system. This can lead to targeted phishing attacks, credential stuffing, or social engineering campaigns against users. Organizations using vulnerable versions risk exposing user data and undermining trust in their security practices.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may violate GDPR and HIPAA by exposing personal data (email addresses) without authorization. GDPR requires protecting personal data and implementing measures to prevent unauthorized access. HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. Failure to address this could result in regulatory penalties and loss of compliance certifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to BlueprintUE Self-Hosted Edition version 4.3.3 or later. If upgrading is not possible, implement rate limiting on the forgot password endpoint and ensure consistent error responses regardless of email validity.
