Stored XSS in WS Form LITE WordPress Plugin

Description

The WS Form LITE – Drag & Drop Contact Form Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'field_<id>[0][0]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.12.18 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is possible because the client-side esc_html() helper returns any non-string value unchanged, allowing a nested-array payload coerced via Array.prototype.toString to reach jQuery .append() unescaped.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the WS Form LITE WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages via the 'field_<id>[0][0]' parameter due to improper input sanitization and output escaping. The issue occurs because the client-side esc_html() function does not properly handle non-string values, enabling nested-array payloads to bypass security measures and execute when users view the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the WS Form LITE plugin versions up to 1.12.18. Inspect form fields for unusual scripts or payloads in the 'field_<id>[0][0]' parameter. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for stored XSS attempts.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. It may also enable phishing attacks by injecting fake login forms. Users with admin access could have their accounts compromised, leading to further site exploitation or data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA by exposing user data to unauthorized parties. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and a breach could result in fines. HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information, and this flaw could allow unauthorized access, violating compliance requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WS Form LITE plugin to the latest version beyond 1.12.18. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily. Implement a web application firewall to block XSS payloads.
