Description

Kyverno before 1.19.2 contains an unchecked type assertion in buildStatementMap that allows unauthenticated attackers to crash the policy engine via crafted attestation statements. Attackers can push an OCI referrer manifest with a non-string type field to bypass image verification under failurePolicy Ignore or crash-loop the reports-controller.

Executive Summary

Kyverno before 1.19.2 has a flaw in the buildStatementMap function where it fails to check the type of the 'type' field in OCI referrer manifests. Attackers can exploit this by submitting crafted manifests with non-string 'type' fields to crash the policy engine or bypass image verification when failurePolicy is set to Ignore.

Detection Guidance

Monitor Kyverno logs for crashes or panics in the policy engine or reports-controller. Check for OCI referrer manifests with non-string type fields in attestation statements. Use Kyverno's built-in audit tools to scan for malformed attestation statements.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to crash the Kyverno policy engine, causing denial-of-service conditions. It can also bypass image verification, allowing unauthorized images to be admitted into the cluster if failurePolicy is set to Ignore.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Kyverno to version 1.19.2 or later immediately. Review and update failurePolicy settings to ensure they are not set to Ignore. Implement stricter validation for OCI referrer manifests and attestation statements. Monitor for signs of exploitation or crashes.
