Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in OpenBMB Internet of Agents where the WebSocket Connection Manager's connect function lacks authentication. By manipulating the agent_name argument, an attacker can hijack an existing agent's identity by creating a duplicate connection. The system silently replaces the original connection without notice, allowing the attacker to receive messages and impersonate the legitimate agent remotely.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized WebSocket connections to the endpoint /ws/{agent_name} in OpenBMB Internet of Agents. Monitor logs for duplicate agent_name connections or unexpected message sources. Use network scanning tools to detect active WebSocket connections on the server.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could impersonate legitimate agents to send unauthorized messages, receive sensitive team communications, or perform actions under a stolen identity. This could lead to data breaches, misinformation, or unauthorized access to restricted resources depending on the agent's permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements that mandate authentication and access controls for sensitive data. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA requires secure access to health information. The lack of authentication may lead to unauthorized access, breaching these regulations and resulting in legal penalties or data exposure.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply token-based authentication for WebSocket connections. Reject duplicate agent_name connections to prevent hijacking. Verify sender identities during message forwarding to ensure only legitimate agents send messages.
