Description

The Symfony HttpClient component NoPrivateNetworkHttpClient does not pin the checked IP address of cached hosts, allowing for DNS rebinding to bypass private network restrictions, resulting in enumeration of internal hosts and ports in Symfony versions prior to 5.4.56, 6.x prior to 6.4.50, 7.x prior to 7.4.23, and 8.x prior to 8.1.11. NoPrivateNetworkHttpClient resolves the host of each request and checks the IP before connecting. It caches the result per host, and passes the IP to the decorated client through the resolve option so that the client connects to the exact IP that was checked. The issue is that resolve was only passed on the first lookup of a host: on subsequent requests, the decorated client resolved the host again on its own. An attacker who controls a host's DNS can exploit this with DNS rebinding by answering the first lookup with a public IP, and subsequent lookups with a private IP, so when an application sends several requests to that host through the same client, the later requests connect to the private IP. This happens, for example, when an application fetches several URLs of a repository provided by a user. The check of the primary_ip in the on_progress callback still aborts the request before anything is sent, but the connection is made, and the error differs depending on whether the port is open or closed. This allows enumerating internal hosts and ports, as in CVE-2024-50342.

CWE ID Description
CWE-367 The product checks the state of a resource before using that resource, but the resource's state can change between the check and the use in a way that invalidates the results of the check.
CWE-918 The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Symfony's HttpClient component, NoPrivateNetworkHttpClient, allows DNS rebinding attacks due to improper IP caching. The client resolves and caches a host's IP after the first request but does not consistently use the cached IP for subsequent requests. An attacker controlling DNS can return a public IP first and a private IP later, causing the client to connect to internal hosts during later requests.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor DNS queries and HTTP client requests for inconsistencies in IP resolution for the same host. Check if the Symfony NoPrivateNetworkHttpClient caches IPs correctly by verifying that subsequent requests to the same host use the originally resolved IP. Use tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect network traffic for DNS rebinding attempts or unexpected connections to private IPs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to enumerate internal hosts and ports within your network. If your application makes multiple requests to a user-controlled host, later requests may connect to private IPs, revealing sensitive internal services or open ports.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to internal systems, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR or HIPAA. Exposure of internal hosts or ports may result in breaches of confidentiality or unauthorized data access, depending on the internal services affected.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Symfony to a patched version (5.4.56, 6.4.50, 7.4.23, or 8.1.11 or later). If updating is not possible, disable the NoPrivateNetworkHttpClient or implement additional network-level protections like firewalls to block unauthorized internal connections. Review application logs for suspicious DNS rebinding patterns or internal host enumeration attempts.
