Description

LMFDB before commit 01829bd contains a server-side template injection vulnerability in the render_knowl function that allows unauthenticated attackers to inject Jinja expressions via request parameters. Attackers can supply crafted query-string values or 'content' data to /knowledge/render/<ID> to reach Python builtins and execute operating system commands as the web application account.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Template Injection (SSTI) vulnerability in LMFDB before commit 01829bd. Attackers can inject malicious Jinja expressions via request parameters into the render_knowl function. This allows unauthenticated users to execute arbitrary Python code and operating system commands on the server as the web application account.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your LMFDB instance is running a version prior to commit 01829bd. Inspect the /knowledge/render/<ID> endpoint for unauthenticated access and verify if request parameters like query-string values or 'content' data are being passed directly into Jinja templates without sanitization.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary commands on the server, potentially leading to data theft, site defacement, or using the server as a foothold for further attacks. The vulnerability allows full control over the application's service account privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for data protection and security due to unauthorized code execution and potential data breaches. It could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles and HIPAA's security rule for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update LMFDB to commit 01829bd or later. Ensure the /knowledge/render/<ID> endpoint is restricted to authenticated users only. Disable or remove the 'content' parameter handling in the knowledge rendering pipeline. Review and apply the changes from the pull request to prevent direct template injection.
